Sources, method and licences
Everything here comes from public sources. Where we summarise, we link to the original.
Transport for London
- TfL Unified API (api.tfl.gov.uk): station locations, lines, route sequences, entrances, facilities, live line status, station disruptions and single fares. Powered by TfL Open Data. Contains OS data © Crown copyright and database rights 2016 and Geomni UK Map data © and database rights [2019]. Used under TfL's transport data terms.
- TfL station data (detailed station data), feed dated 20 October 2026: toilets, platforms, step-free routes, boarding step and gap, and step-free interchange distances.
- Step-free Tube guide, October 2026 edition, summarised in our own words for 36 central stations. © TfL.
- Walking maps: West End, City of London, Zones 1–3 (© TfL, May 2025).
- Adult fares 2026 and TfL's pages on capping, touching in and out, help from staff, travelling with a buggy, the Night Tube and airports.
We don't use the Tube map, the roundel, TfL's logos, line colours or typeface. Line names are written in plain text.
OpenStreetMap
Nearby places, park outlines and the background map come from OpenStreetMap, © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database Licence. Map tiles are provided by the OpenStreetMap Foundation under its tile usage policy. You can report or fix a map issue.
How we choose nearby places
We list museums, galleries, landmarks, notable parks and squares, markets, theatres, statues, memorials, libraries and viewpoints mapped in OpenStreetMap within about 650 m of a Zone 1 station or 900 m elsewhere. Parks need to be notable (linked to Wikidata) or reasonably large. Statues are only described as statues where OpenStreetMap tags them that way.
How we work out distances and times
Distances are straight-line ("as the crow flies") from the station's centre point to the place (or to the nearest edge of a park). Walking times on station pages are estimates, marked "est.": the straight-line distance plus 30% for real streets, at 80 metres a minute. Walking times between stations taken from TfL's walking maps are TfL's own figures and are labelled as such.
Step-free details
For 36 central stations we summarise TfL's Step-free Tube guide. For every station, we also show what TfL's station data records for each platform: whether it has a step-free route from the street, and the boarding step and gap. We describe this as what the data shows, not as a guarantee, and always link to TfL's live station page for lift status.
Which pages are in search results
Station pages with little unique information (no notable places nearby, no TfL notes and no interchange) are still published and linked, but asked not to appear in search results until we can add more. Currently 213 station pages are indexed and 59 are not.
